PRESENTS: MARY’S GOSPEL by Geraldine Brophy
17 Mar–10
April 8pm. No performance Sundays.
Herald Theatre, Aotea
Centre, THE EDGE
Mary and Lizzie are part of the
O’Sullivans – a large, Irish Catholic family, who control
most of the construction business in the Hutt Valley.
At
15, Mary had a baby boy… Christie.
In the beginning there
were no words
Only the dark
And the cold.
Naenae
dark, Little Fish, busted – light dark.
Breath like
marshmallows from Woollies;
Powdery, fat.
So Mary
begins her gospels.
The story of her life, for her
half-caste son, Christie. Little Fish.
As she speaks,
Christie responds in the language of dance.
This communion is their Gospel truth.
This moving, poetic and funny play,
presents a view of life from the inside of mental illness,
and is the newest work from the pen of Geraldine
Brophy.

MUSIC
DR JOHN
IN CONCERT
Thurs 1 April 8pm
Great Hall, Auckland Town
Hall, THE EDGE
Dr John proudly stands along side
of Louis Armstrong and Fats Domino as one of New Orleans’
all-time distinctive voices. Not only is the Good Doctor’s
dry, gravel cackle one of the most infectious sounds in both
jazz and popular music, but he is universally celebrated as
the living embodiment of the rich musical heritage exclusive
to the Crescent City. Both his unique musical approach and
his striking physical appearance encompasses local African,
American-Indian and Creole influences mixed in with quite a
few equally exotic tributaries besides. He’s both the
essence of the city’s colourful past and its ever evolving
future.

MUSIC
LUCINDA WILLIAMS
Tues 6
April 8pm
Great Hall, Auckland Town Hall, THE
EDGE
Adrian Bohm is proud to present Lucinda
Williams in her first New Zealand tour for more than 10
years.
Hailed by Time Magazine in 2000 as "America’s best
songwriter", Lucinda Williams unique singing & songwriting
talent combines equal parts blues, folk, country and rock
anchored by deeply poetic lyrics that cut right to the
chase.
Her strong suit has always been conveying the full
spectrum of the human experience and the emotions associated
with it – from heartbreak, loss, betrayal and anger to
desire, exhilaration and redemption.
The oldest child of
renowned poet Miller Williams, Lucinda recorded two
acclaimed records for Smithsonian/Folkways before hitting
her stride in 1988 with her self-titled debut for the Rough
Trade label. Country artists Patty Loveless’ and Mary-Chapin
Carpenter’s versions of the album’s The Night’s Too Long and
Passionate Kisses respectively, shot right to the top of the
country charts, with the latter tune garnering Lucinda a
Grammy award in 1992.
That same year, Lucinda released
Sweet Old World, then in 1998 she released the stunning,
Grammy-winning Car Wheels on a Gravel Road. That was
followed in 2000 with the laid-back, sensually dripping
Essence.
And now there’s the genre-crossing World Without
Tears, an album which is earning glowing reviews. Recorded
with producer Mark Howard in a 1920’s mansion in the heart
of Los Angeles, Williams has cited the recording process as
being truly magical. On World Without Tears she maintains
artistic vibrancy while synthesising various musical
elements. From the raw and sexually charged to the swampy
and emotionally intense, Williams is the personification of
the “a little bit country, a little bit rock & roll”
idiom.
Special guests to be announced.

INTERNATIONAL CONCERT
ATTRACTIONS IN ASSOCIATION WITH JON NICHOLLS RESENTS:
SHIRLEY BASSEY
ASB Theatre, Aotea Centre, THE
EDGE
Sat 1 & Sun 2 May 8pm
One of the greats of
the entertainment business,Shirley Bassey’s unwavering
appeal spans more than four decades and all corners of the
globe.
Shirley’s break came when prominent British
bandleader Jack Hylton spotted her and she was engaged to
appear with Al Read in the 1955 Christmas Show at London’s
Adelphi Theatre and in his revue Such is Life, which ran for
a year.
Her first smash hit came in 1957 with the
calypso- flavoured Banana Boat Song.
This was soon
followed by As I Love You and Kiss Me Honey Honey Kiss Me,
both songs entering the Top 10 at the same time.
She
became a regular commuter across the Atlantic where her
concert and cabaret appearances were guaranteed sell-outs,
and in 1964 her recording of the James Bond theme song
Goldfinger became a world-wide hit, selling more than one
million copies in the US alone. This was the first of the
James Bond movie tracks that she sang – Diamonds Are Forever
and Moonraker followed, helping to establish her as a
household name on every continent.
Shirley’s list of
musical achievements is formidable: more than 20 silver
discs in Britain, and 50-plus gold discs for international
record sales making her one of Britain’s most successful
singing stars.
Shirley Bassey performed a sell out UK
tour in June 2003 celebrating an astounding 50 years in show
business.
Recently, Shirley Bassey has been delighted and
honoured to be the proud recipient of several distinguished
awards including Unesco’s Artist for Peace Awards and in
April 2003, the French government honoured her with a Legion
D’Honneur in recognition of her successful career and in
October 2003 Shirely Bassey received a Lifetime Achievement
Award at the National Music Awards in London.

Old Wicked Songs tells the story of a
belligerent old music teacher and his unwilling young
protégé.
Set in Vienna in 1986, Jon Maran’s
much-acclaimed play deftly explores the relationship between
teacher and pupil using music as a catalyst for
understanding and compassion.
Nominated for the 1996
Pulitzer Prize for Drama, it is a virtuoso piece for two men
who must both act their roles with passion and intensity,
and sing and play piano with great skill.
Robert
Schumann’s Dichterliebe forms the centrepiece of this
masterful piece of theatre set against the political
backdrop of Austria’s 1986 general elections.
The play
delves deeper into the psyche of two men affected in very
different ways by the political activities of the Third
Reich. But it is their common interest in music that compels
them to share their stories.

PRESENT:
SONGS OF THE SEA (NGA WAIATA O TE
MOANA)
26–27 June 10am & 12.30pm
Herald Theatre, Aotea
Centre, THE EDGE
Suitable for 2–7 year
olds
Written and directed by Peter Wilson with exciting
new music by Steve Gallagher.
Co-designed by Peter Wilson
and William Wilson.
Where did all the fish in the sea come
from? Songs of the Sea invites young audiences to look to
where the sky meets the sea for the answers!
In a
kaleidoscope of Te Reo and English song, dance, puppets and
masks, Songs of the Sea (Nga Waiata o te Moana) unfolds the
mysteries and myths of where the first fish came
from.
From the sun and moon (ra and marama), the Milky
Way and the Great Shaper of the Universe come a myriad of
marine creatures. Children can float in a starry sky and
dive into a great underwater world as music and stage
wizardry transform their day. They can put faces to fish
names as they meet sunfish (ratahuihui), moonfish, starfish
(patangaroa) and seahorse. Then watch as all fish in the sea
swim up the great rainbow to take on their scales of many
colours.
Songs of the Sea is a beautiful new compilation
of New Zealand stories that holds a mirror up to a young
child’s world and opens the door to a new one!
