BATS is living up to its title of Heart of the Fringe' with satisfied crowds flowing into the Back Bar, the Pit, and gathering on the street outside after sold-out and critically acclaimed performances, with even a surprise visit by the Sk8Board Poets for some late night inspiration.
The coming week sees "GoldenBoys" open on Sunday 22nd, a play that follows the lives of those affected by the tragic death of a school boy. GoldenBoys' arrival on the stage is a triumph for writer/director Paul Rothwell who is now also taking on the lead role in a last minute casting frenzy.
On the other end of the spectrum, Benjamin Crellin brings his stand-up show "Benjamin Crellin @witsend" to the theatre on Tuesday, marking a return to his favourite venue. This self-described 'tired, washed-up comic' breaks stand-up stereotypes by spurning jokes about booze, blokes, and the missus for intellectual and witty insights on politics, the world, and undoubtedly some things that should have been left in the notebook.
Christchurch's Scrambled Legs Dance Company explore the interplay between contemporary dance and film in "7", premiering at BATS on Thursday. The story follows six characters who share a common sense of loss and are exposed for their vices and attributes of intrigue, lust, lament, and humour.
"The Platinum Connection" opens on Friday 27th, following the path of love through office email, cell-phones, a trip to France, andŠ rock climbing? So grab yourself a French rock-climber, strap on some crampons, and text your way to love at BATS Theatre.
With some shows being sold out days in advance, avoid the dreaded waiting list by booking early via phone (8024175), email (bats@bats.co.nz), or in person at 1 Kent Terrace.
