Our Amazing Marine Life – Let’s Protect It
Seaweek is a week-long celebration of all things marine, providing fun and fishy events aiming to entertain whilst raising awareness of environmental sea issues.
In collaboration with New Zealand Underwater, Auckland Museum will play host to many of the activities. These include behind-the-scenes tours, a special marine display, children’s workshops, and a special Living Treasures Day packed with marine-themed events.
During the week, kids can create and build their own marine animal or plant, as well as take part in a special underwater drama. Visitors to the Museum will be greeted by a huge underwater image painted during Seaweek in the foyer by wildlife artist, Gordon Howard.
The Living Treasures Day will take place on Sunday 14 March, and promises to be a jam-packed marine-filled day for both young and old with live performances, lectures and kids’ activities.
Kids are invited to come dressed as their favourite sea creature or pirate and join in our fun and educational trail through the marine galleries, as well as take part in the marine-themed activities in our Discovery Centres. Learn how to be a real pirate and go on a treasure hunt with our special pirate workshop!
Adults can enjoy presentations by local marine experts such as our own Museum palaeontologist, Mike Eagle, who will hold a talk about shell fossils. There will also be a special documentary screening of “The Octopus’ Garden”.
There will be live performances, including sea shanty arrangements by David Hamilton, played by solo classical guitarist Bruce Paine.
See below for the full programme of Seaweek 2004 activities.
