FRINGE '04: Happy Hour for Miserable Children
Theatre Beating.
presents…
Press Release
In Dr Zak’s bar, in a
bad part of town,
Work two inept builders who are
brotherly clowns.
A sinister priest (who is also Sound
Foley),
Has asked them to make this place of sin
holy.
Behind bars and bordellos there is always a
story,
And the history of this bar is brutal and
gory.
The past catches up with the clowns working
there,
Bringing mystery, adventure, courage and
scares!
We bring you this show without sleeping or
eating,
You’d be foolish to miss it.
Love, Theatre Beating.
The illustrious construction careers of Mr. Toot and Mr. Collins take a turn for the paranormal when they are employed to renovate a once-thriving Gogo bar owned by the unpredictable and salubrious Dr Zak.
Happy Hour for Miserable Children is a rummage through the squalid trouser pockets of mime, cabaret and gothic, burlesque, freak shows. It is a homage to the slapstick traditions of the 20’s and 30’s. It is the world of silent film living, breathing and being solidly thumped on its unprotected skull live on stage.
Theatre Beating was formed by Barnie Duncan and Trygve Wakenshaw after working together in ‘The Butcher’s Daughter’ (by Pandemonium Theatre Co.). The duo locked themselves in a dark cupboard for months while they devised the first version of ‘Happy Hour’. It saw the glow of night in late October 2003 at Auckland’s Covert Theatre. It was a cult hit.
Happy Hour for Miserable Children
comes to Wellington for the Fringe Festival ’04. Once again
we have put nutrition on the back-burner, our debt to the
bank of sleep has now reached an ominously dark shade of
red, and the makers of alcoholic beverages can send their
children to university.
We do this for you. It hurts, but
you’re worth it.
