FRINGE '04: Generation MTV

Fringe Festival 2004


A little gem in the crown of the fringe festival 2004, Generation MTV will revel the influence of music television that pervades all corners of our image-driven society, the show will sew together four creative threads – Music, Dance, Fashion and Art, into an extravaganza of popular culture. The aim will to examine the phenomenon of pop culture with an undertone of irony, providing an amalgamation of underground and mainstream.

The line up includes musical acts, those confirmed are Deva Mahal and Sheba Williams of Afronesia, Jazz singer Claire Terry, as well as a selection of fine djs from Solid Wax to support the the dancers and models. Similtaneously working with creative talents from visual teams, graphic designers, vjing on screen. Short films will be played to support live acts on stage produced by graduate film students, while artist will be showing there talents under big lights in innovative ways.

Generation MTV will be held during the fringe festival, on Wednesday 10th of March at Subnine, 9 Edward Street. There will be a small cover charge 10 dollars to help financially support the talent involved however the start up capital required for a show of this magnitude relies on sponsorship.

The sheer number of people involved in Generation MTV means that the attendence numbers will be high and the event will be thoroughly publicised in innovative ways.

“I am trying to explore the generation of young adults who are obviously inspired by music, or the music culture, and music videos.” Says Sally Tran, organiser of this fringe event, “different genres of music reflect different life styles, different attitudes, from what party you will vote for in the next election to what colour pants you will wear out on a Saturday night..”

Sally Tran, designer of the fashion lable ISH has been invloved with a lot of different fashion shows, including ‘Quiddity’ fringe 2003, Wellington Fashion Festival, 2003, and her individual show in October 2003 called ‘The Jump Off’ which was a huge success.

So shake up your dice, throw down your ice, pop your party candy and get ready for a booty shakin’ ride.
