The production

There’s trouble in the Ivory Tower. Tony and Saul are brothers, both highly regarded academics. Tony is an expert in folklore, the timeless stories that span continents and are passed down from generation to generation. He is very charismatic and something of an academic celebrity, often a guest on late night television panels. Saul's specialty is ancient history as fact. He devotes his academic research to the pursuit of proof.

Which leads to the point of contention between the brothers; the stories of The Bible. Tony considers them to be fables, moral themes repeated through history, metaphors written down so man can learn from his mistakes. Saul sees them as nothing more than straight historic record.

We enter the brother's lives as they each release watershed papers. Saul’s is largely overlooked while Tony’s is acclaimed by the academic community.

A classic tale of sibling and professional rivalry follows, and the dramatic events that transpire vindicate one of the brother’s theories- but which one will be proven right?

Fact and Fable combines elements of Biblical stories, mythology and comedy in a one man show that will challenge audiences to reconsider their perceptions of what truth is.

The company

Splinter is made up of three of Wellington’s new generation of theatrical innovators. Co-devisor Jamie Standen (originally from Hastings) is a ‘Creative’ for advertising agency Clemenger BBDO; in 2003 he was a finalist at the Cannes International Advertising Festival, a finalist at the Clio International advertising awards in Miami, a finalist at the Australian advertising awards, and received Bronze, Silver and the Emerging Talent prize at the New Zealand advertising awards.

Co-devisor Kevin Keys (also originally from Hastings) is an actor and musician. He has appeared in a number of productions in Wellington, including the Fringe 2003’s hit show Potted; as well as an obligatory stint as an extra on The Lord of the Rings.Kevin also performs with the Central Band of the Royal New Zealand Air Force and the Wellington Sinfonia.

Designer and producer Bronwyn Bent (grew up in Hamilton and Cambridge) has recently returned from London where she studied set design at one of UK’s top art colleges, Central St. Martin’s School of Art and Design. She also worked at the prestigious Donmar Warehouse Theatre, where until recently the artistic director was Oscar winner Sam Mendes, and where she worked as a warsdrobe assistant on Tony and Oliver award winning productions with directors such as Philip Seymour Hoffman and John Madden.
