Pianist in NZ for three concerts
“…Wong Doe proved
that all that glitters can indeed be gold.” (New Zealand
Herald)
“…this young pianist showed once more why he had
been chosen as ‘audience favourite’” (Ha’aretz, Tel
Aviv)
Henry Wong Doe, the young New Zealand pianist whose début with the Auckland Philharmonia last year was so impressive that he was immediately re-engaged, performs in Auckland next month.
One of the most successful New Zealand pianists of his generation, Henry Wong Doe is rapidly gaining recognition in competitions, and popularity among audiences around the world. Critics and jury members have often remarked on his outstanding creativity and originality in programmes and interpretation. He is the winner of “Audience Favourite” prizes at both the Busoni and Rubinstein International Piano Competitions, and recently won a place in the finals of the 2004 Concert Artists Guild International Competition to be held in March.
On Thursday 4 March, Henry performs Rachmaninov’s grand and physically demanding Third Piano Concerto with the Auckland Philharmonia during the orchestra’s Vero Premier Series. Michael Christie conducts this concert which also includes Dvoøák’s Legends (Nos 3 & 10) and Dvoøák’s Symphony No.6.
At 6pm on Friday 5 March Henry again joins the orchestra, for a 75 minute “Happy Hour” concert – this is a lively “taster” to introduce classical and dramatic music, and aside from being able to enjoy a drink while watching the concert, this year, with the support of Auckland City, the concert is free.
Henry’s final appearance in Auckland is on Tuesday 9 March when he performs a benefit recital to help fund the final requirements of his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at New York’s Juilliard School.
