Fringe NZ Sprawls Across The Capital

Fringe NZ Sprawls Across The Capital

The Fringe NZ Festival '04: Revelation' is set to break new boundaries in the Wellington art scene, with events sprawling across a record number of venues throughout the inner-city and beyond, including some very unlikely places.

From the 14th February to the 14th March Fringe NZ will be taking over local theatres, art studios, community halls, cinemas and galleries, bars and clubs, churches, a school yard and even the Town Hall car-park!

The range of art on offer is just as diverse, with everything from Cafe Dement, a play about a cafe held in a cafe with cappuccinos served throughout, to a live performance by Harry the Dead Poet at the Carter Observatory Planetarium and Skip It, a cosy domestic 1980s lounge constructed within a Dimac skip bin outside the Town Hall.

The city's malls, parks, pavements and public spaces will also play unexpected host to a variety of performances including a wild breed of Sk8board Poets, Poop a fast, free and furious performance about feathered fiends in Pigeon Park and Rear Projection Window, a series of video projections in the upper windows of Cuba Mall.

Making use of unusual venues is encouraged by Fringe NZ, with the festival providing the opportunity for New Zealanders to experience art that dares to venture beyond the mainstream.

“The use of five churches by participants is particularly fitting considering the theme of this year's event - Revelation“, says Fringe Liaison Manager Sarah Bartel.
