Summer Cinema under the stars at Viaduct Harbour
Auckland, 3 December 2003
A new open-air cinema will soon give Auckland's Viaduct Harbour a big entertainment boost. The temporary movie theatre will operate on Te Wero Island from 15 January to 15 February 2004, with seating for up to 2000 people. There will be a screening every night just after sunset.
All seating is uncovered and allocated on a 'first come, first served' basis. The 1440 flat seats are $12 each, and the 560 grandstand seats are $16 each.
The movie itself is just one part of the experience - the environment and scenery of the Viaduct Harbour creates the atmosphere of a very special event. Moviegoers can enjoy the sunset, softdrinks and ice creams. As night falls the giant screen is inflated and an unforgettable movie-going experience begins.
Open-Air Cinema's were first run in Italy and Greece. In the 80's some innovative locals took the concept over the Alps to Switzerland and Germany. After Zurich, Berlin, Munich, Melbourne and Sydney, Auckland can enjoy its own Open-Air Cinema.
The Viaduct Harbour is the ideal location, close to Britomart and many nearby car parks. Our Open-Air Cinema is an event for Aucklanders as well as for tourists from all over the world.
The movie line-up will be announced by Tuesday, 16 December 2003 on www.openair.co.nz. The first season includes the recent work of many New Zealand actors, directors and producers. A selection of new releases and classics will also be screened.
In the event of strong winds (over 32 knots) the screen will need to be deflated, and customers will be refunded if the show is cancelled.

Open-Air Cinema is a private initiative of some idealistic Waiheke Island residents. The aim is to add a spark to Auckland's summer lifestyle and offer a special movie-going experience to Aucklanders and tourists as well.
