Australia Mania hits Auckland Zoo!

AUSTRALIA MANIA hits Auckland Zoo on Saturday, 6 December (10am – 2.30pm) when we say ‘g’day’ to all our Australian mates (old and new!) in our revamped Aussie Walkabout!

“To celebrate the fantastic new features and residents, we’ve lined up a ‘swag’ of Oz-style action, culture and entertainment. It’s a must for all grown-ups and kids, big or small!” says Jackie Sanders, Auckland Zoo events Co-ordinator.

Take a leisurely stroll through the spacious new aviary to see beautiful multi-coloured lorikeets. Then there are all the new kids on the block to meet: brolgas, emus and the ultimate Aussies, our new kangaroos. However, don’t forget to say g’day to the original residents too – our wallabies! And if you’re feeling a joke or two coming on, try to get the last laugh in with our “merry, merry kings of the bush” at the kookaburra enclosure.

Close your eyes and you will believe you’ve been transported to the ‘Outback’ when Queensland band OKA bring you the evocative sounds of the didgeridoo. Their high-energy performance is a unique and unforgettable fusion of traditional didgeridoo rhythms and stories woven into pumping contemporary sounds.

The fabulous Cairns-based Djengi Buai dancers, who have performed at WOMAD in Spain and at the Sydney Olympics, will take you on a journey back to the ancient era of creation and the ‘Dreamtime’. They’ll be performing traditional animal dances in both Torres Straits and Aboriginal dancing styles.

Both adults and kids can find out how to play the didgeridoo in one of a series of awesome workshops throughout the day on indigenous Australian art and culture, including the meaning of the ‘Dreamtime’ dances.

“Hello possums!” Talking about unforgettable experiences, “Dame Edna Everage” is one of many very special Aussie guests to look out for.

Of course, we’ll be firing up the ‘barbies’ so you can buy some ‘fair dinkum’ Aussie ‘tucker’. Plus, you can be in to win, as we have two “Oz Experience” trips (valued at $500 each) to give away!
