$6 Million Upgrade of Aotea Centre convention facilities underway
The $6 million refurbishment of THE EDGE® key convention facilities at the Aotea Centre has begun.
From today (SUBS: Thurs 27 November) the Aotea Centre’s convention facilities are closed while it undergoes its first major upgrade since the centre was completed in 1990.
The refurbishment is expected to take almost six months and the new convention centre will open in mid-2004 with increased floor space and greater flexibility.
The ASB Theatre and Herald Theatre in the Aotea Centre will continue to operate during the refurbishment and THE EDGE® is working closely with contractors to ensure the least amount of disruption to patrons.
Direct access into the Aotea Centre from the Civic Carpark will be unavailable during the refurbishment and alternative routes will be clearly signposted.
The stairs from the underground carpark up to Aotea Square will still be open, while disabled access is available via the carpark exit at the Village cinemas complex. Alternatively patrons can exit the carpark via the Auckland Town Hall entrance and cross Aotea Square to the Aotea Centre.
“We apologise for any inconvenience during the refurbishment and we are working closely with Auckland City Parking Services to ensure clear signage for people visiting the Aotea Centre,” says THE EDGE® property manager Suzanne Webb.
The new-look Aotea Centre will be exceptionally flexible with 11 breakout rooms on three levels which can be merged to suit individual client needs. The rooms will be suitable for all conference needs including plenary sessions, breakout sessions, cocktail functions and banquets and will be ideal for conventions for about 1200 delegates.
