Carreras Gets Official Maori Welcome
World-renowned opera performer and one of the Three Tenors, Jose Carreras arrived in New Zealand today and was welcomed with a powhiri in Wellington.
Mr Carreras was guided through the powhiri by Lillie Simmons (left) and Puti Mackey from kapa haka group Te Ati Kimihia.
Carreras performs two concerts in New Zealand this weekend with his longstanding accompanist, pianist Lorenzo Bavaj. The first, tomorrow night (Friday 21 November) at the Michael Fowler Centre and then at Auckland's Aotea Centre on Sunday 23 November.
He later performed the hongi with elders including Tamehana Tai Rakena.
