Sir Terry Mclean National Sports Journalism Awards Winners Announced Tonight

New Zealand’s top sports journalists and photographers were recognised at the annual Sir Terry McLean National Sports Journalism Awards held in Wairakei tonight.

The Awards, sponsored by SPARC, honour legendary sports journalist, Sir Terry McLean, or ‘TP’ as he was known to his many readers.

One of the highlights saw Otago Daily Times rugby and cricket writer, Brent Edwards, breaking a long-running Auckland winning streak as Edwards took out the Phillips Award for Sports Reporting and the Masport Sports Journalist of the Year.

The SPARC Outstanding Contribution to Sport Through Journalism Award went to yachting journalist, Peter Montgomery.

In congratulating the winners, SPARC’s Chief Executive, Nicholas Hill, acknowledged the record number of entrants in this year’s Awards – 160 across all categories.

“The standard of entries, as always, was extremely high and I congratulate every journalist and photographer recognised this evening.

“SPARC acknowledges the significant contribution the sports media in New Zealand make every single day. It is the writers and photographers that record and articulate sport’s national and regional voice. To even make the finals of the TP McLean Awards is a significant achievement,” he said.

“The voice of Kiwi yachting, Peter Montgomery, is a deserved winner of the SPARC Lifetime Contribution to Journalism through Sport Award. I extend my congratulations also to Lindsay Knight and Brendan Telfer, both of whom were conferred Life Memberships by the New Zealand Sports Journalists Association tonight.”

These are the 23rd NZSJA awards, the ninth year under the patronage of SPARC and the third year known as the Sir Terry McLean National Sports Journalism Awards.
