New Busker Comedy Club Venue
11th Annual New Zealand Community Trust
World Buskers Festival, Christchurch, New Zealand
Thursday, 15 to Sunday, 25 January, 2004
Building on the tradition of varied and interesting venues for street performance, the 11th Annual New Zealand Community
Trust World Buskers Festival has announced the Arts Centre’s North Quad will be the new venue for the next CPIT Busker
Comedy Club.
“We’re delighted to provide the Festival with a performance venue at The Arts Centre because it offers a unique and
comfortable environment for audiences and performers”, says Arts Centre public relations, Dawn Brown.
The CPIT BUSKER COMEDY CLUB is an outdoor, cabaret-style show. Every night up to five acts from the Festival line up,
including theatre, comedy and circus acts, will perform from 7.00 pm to 10.30 pm. This year the shows will be hosted by
the acclaimed LA-based Blackstreet Boyz – a dynamic comedy duo that won over the 2003 World Buskers Festival audience
like no other act has ever done – and entry is FREE.
“In the past, our evening programmes have been some of the most popular”, says Festival Director, Jodi Wright. “We’re
looking forward to creating an atmosphere in the North Quad for some serious entertainment.”
Festival organisers stress the Busker Comedy Club shows are produced for mature audiences only and, in order to retain
the artistic integrity of the performances, no children will be admitted.
This year also sees the return of another late night venue, LATE NIGHT WITH THE BUSKERS at the Loaded Hog. This
relatively new programme varies from the Buskers Comedy Club by concentrating on stand-up and comedy theatre acts which
are almost all exclusive to this location. Hosted by master MC and magician Nick Nickolas, the shows run nightly from
Friday, 16 to Sunday, 25 January, 9.00 pm to 11.00 pm.
The Festival was founded in 1994 by Festival City Trust – a charitable trust established to foster the arts by producing
high profile and accessible arts-based events.
The World Buskers Festival is core funded by the Christchurch City Council and sponsored by the New Zealand Community
Trust, The CPIT, The Christchurch Press, Montana Wines Ltd., The Arts Centre of Christchurch, Radionetwork, the Loaded
Hog, Phantom, McCrory Thomas Travel and KPMG. The festival is the recipient of grants and donations from the Lion
Foundation, The Community Trust, Bendigo Valley Trust, The Canterbury Foundation, Pub Charity, Community Grants
Foundation, ASIA 2000 Foundations, NZJEP, Creative Communities and a variety of other supporters - in kind, contra and
financial contributors.
