NESCAFÉ Big Break win makes
dreams come true for three Kiwi youths
A motorcycle racer, a sharemilker and a wildlife photographer now have the power to make their dreams come true after being awarded an AUD$20,000 NESCAFÉ Big Break.
Fired by their visions Karl Morgan, Nick Pemberton and Stephen Bradley demonstrated determination and passion to each scoop a AUD$20,000 prize from a field of more than 8000 Big Break entrants across Australia and New Zealand.
Karl, Nick and Stephen were three of four New Zealand AUD$2000 winners who travelled to Sydney to pitch their Big Break ideas against 19 other young Antipodean visionaries in a fiercely competitive field.
Karl (16) from Auckland, Nick (23) from Wyndham (Southland) and Stephen Bradley (22) from Akaroa presented their big ideas to the judging panel which included NESCAFÉ Big Break past winner Sarah Raudkivi, a top New Zealand fencer.
A keen motorcycle enthusiast who has been racing since he was 13, Karl won a big break to become a world champion in either the 125GP class, 600cc World Supersport class or MotoGP class.
Nick, a dedicated dairy farmer currently managing a 450 cow dairy farm, won a big break to buy milking cows so he can further his career in the industry.
A passionate wildlife photographer inspired by Sweden's Mattias Klum and his book Borneo Rainforest, Stephen won a big break to fund equipment to take him overland from Australia to Europe and hopes to ultimately work for National Geographic.
"I'm over the moon! I've already called my photography shop to order a new camera. I can't wait to begin my trip," says Stephen.
Fashion designer and one half of clothing label mo-teef, Amy Keegan from Christchurch, was the other Kiwi who travelled to Sydney and was a runner-up winner.
Now in its 14th year, the unique NESCAFÉ Big Break attracted a record number of entries this year, almost twice the previous year, throughout Australasia.
A total of AUD$256,000 was awarded in two age categories - 16 to 19 years and 20 to 24 years.
NESCAFÉ Big Break is open to any young person with an innovative idea or special talent that needs a cash break to get them started. It's a unique programme in that it's not designed to be a high achievement award. It is about giving young people the freedom to choose what they want to do with their lives and providing them with the backing to pursue their dreams and goals.
