Barbie Swans into Movie Stardom

For Immediate Release Thursday 16th October 2003

Barbie Swans into Movie Stardom

The world’s most famous movie star doll will once again step into the limelight with the launch of her third feature film, Barbie of Swan Lake.

After a star performance in last year’s incredibly successful Barbie as Rapunzel, Barbie will take on the role of Odette, a young woman who is transformed into a swan by an evil wizard.

Based on the classic 19th century German fairytale, but with a modern twist for today’s girl, Barbie of Swan Lake tells the story of a brave young girl who embarks on an exciting adventure that sees her overcome the evil wizard’s spell through confidence, determination and love.

TV star of Frasier, Kelsey Grammer, is the celebrity voice behind the evil wizard, Rothbart, who takes over the enchanted forest and casts a spell on Odette.

Barbie is ably supported by a stellar cast including Ken as the handsome Prince Daniel with whom Odette falls in love, Teresa as the Fairy Queen, Lila the unicorn and Kelly and Tommy and as cute forest creatures.

The film uses some of the most advanced CGI (computer generated imagery) animation ever created and beautiful ballet choreography performed by the dancers from the renowned New York City Ballet. The dancers’ movements were transformed into stunning animated dance scenes via advanced motion sensor technology.

The movie, which is set to the original Tchaikovsky score performed by the London Symphony Orchestra, will premiere on TV3 followed by its release on video and DVD.

Bringing the movie to life for little girls everywhere will be a beautiful array of dolls, toys and accessories including a stunning Barbie as Odette, Ken as Prince Daniel and Lila the Unicorn. Girls can relive the magic over and over again with the video, DVD and even CD-Rom Game.

As part of the launch of the movie and doll line, Mattel will implement a US $2million world-wide Barbie Cares program aimed at supporting children in the arts. In New Zealand, Mattel will join forces with the Royal Academy of Dance’s youth club, Radacadabra, which introduces kids to the captivating world of dance and the arts by providing a fun, safe interactive stage upon which they can play. Together they will run a scholarship program with ballet schools around the country where young dancers will have the opportunity to win dance scholarships and other great prizes.

Barbie of Swan Lake will air on TV 3 on Saturday October 27th at 3pm.
