Student Designer Has It and Is Ready to Play

It’s play and it’s fun yet it was serious attitude for the winners of the 2003 LYCRA® HAS IT™ Student Fashion Design Awards in association with Charles Parsons.

Supreme Winner: Name: Haydn Turner School: Massey University Wellington Campus Garment title: Bob’s Best

‘Bobs Best’, a man’s jacket, shirt and trouser ensemble created by Haydn Turner of Massey University took the Supreme Award at a gala ceremony held at the Hilton Hotel, Auckland last night (Tuesday 30 September).

The theme for this year’s program was “Play Planet: It’s all about fun yet appearance is to be taken seriously.” The Supreme Award was judged across six categories Swimwear, Intimate Apparel, Streetwear, Activewear, Menswear and Avant Garde. Turner took the Supreme award for his Menswear entry of checked trousers worn with a pink, brown and pastel blue polo shirt contrasted with a cord sports coat to create a stylish look for the man on the street.

Menswear runner Up Dijana Selak from Auckland University of Technology brought originality and humour into her design ‘Check Mate’. Three outfits in one – a hooded jacket in violet juxtaposed with traditional men’s trunks worn with a wrap towel. Play was the name of the game with a signature chess board piece embroidered on each of the garments.

Lisa Hansen from Christchurch Polytechnic featured bright green and black nylon with LYCRA® in her winning design in the Swimwear category.

This two-toned one piece ‘Lizard’ shaped swimsuit inspired the judges with its uniqueness of design. A cut out graphic of a lizard followed the contours of the body to create an eye catching and innovative piece.

Swimwear runner up position went to Nicole van Notten also of Christchurch Polytechnic. ‘Vibrant and Frolicsome’, this bright red one piece with cut away sides and single strap added a splash of colour to all that is daring and playful. The 80’s movie “Back to the Future 2” was the inspiration behind Victoria Powley of Otago Polytechnic's highly commended swimsuit. Wanting to bring back the one piece, Powley created a strapless white cotton and LYCRA® swimsuit featuring a film strip print running down the front panels.

Inspiration for the winning garment in the Activewear category came from the Broadway show “Cabaret” starring Liza Minnelli. Detailing included a wild rose design of sequins and beads on the coat tails signifying the desire to have fun, be free and uninhibited. Massey University’s Stacey Raggett titled her runner up entry ‘Psychedelic Chic’. Drawing inspiration from the world of ballet, Stacey created a tulle-netting tutu with nylon LYCRA® overlay topped with feathers and a one-piece leotard combining function with elegance.

Activewear highly commended went to Stephanie Oliver from Otago Polytechnic with her design “All Work and No Croquet Makes Jack a Dull Boy”. This cute ensemble of top, skirt and knickers brought a contemporary new face to the traditional game of croquet.

Amy Macaskill from Wanganui UCOL won first place in the Intimate Apparel section with her entry entitled “Stray”. Pink pussycat bra, Stray Cat briefs, Singlet and Grey Marle Hoodie completed her outfit.

Macaskill’s soft feminine pink Tactel® and LYCRA® was offset with grey marle cotton and LYCRA® to give a sexy yet playful tone. Stephanie West also from Wanganui UCOL came in runner up with her “Tea Party” entry. Knickers hand printed with ballerina and heart designs were offset with an intricate bra top. West cleverly constructed her design using a string of pearls halter top which cascaded seductively down the back. A LYCRA® and nylon evening gown completed the look adding a touch of playfulness to this romantic and feminine piece.

Sara created a sexy off the shoulder top with tea dyed cotton ribbing neckline and waist band, decorated with printed cranes and appliquéd mesh squares. Runner up was Bron Corbet from Bay Of Plenty Polytechnic with “Urbanesque Folklore”. A tailored skirt playfully embroidered with felt, buttons and mirrors in the pleats reflected the colour, humour and diversity of our ‘play planet’. A wrap top silhouetted close to the body highlighted the leniency of LYCRA® based fabrics.

Winner Kate Wakeling from Massey University took first place with “Mahogany”, a draped full length dress in polyester and LYCRA® stretch knitted velvet with a hood/cowl back.

The Avant Garde section showed there were no boundaries to couture when at play. Applique leaves, satin stitched branches and hand stitched flowers added a touch of romanticism to what the judges described as: “A garment that has pushed the boundaries of the brief without sacrificing the silhouette of the body”.

“I Dream of Jeannie” designed by Massey University’s Jay Goh was runner up in this category with an all-in-one balloon pant suit skilfully screen printed to give dimensional shape and texture. Highly commended was Niki Boolieris also from Massey University for her Woodland Nymph design, a carefully constructed nylon, polyester and LYCRA® dress worn over layers of tulle.

Judging was no easy task for World Designer Francis Hooper, Breakfast Presenter Kate Hawkesby and Viva Fashion Editor Fiona Hawtin. With over 150 entrants the judges were looking for originality, creativity, construction and quality of presentation. “Yet again the stars stood out,” said Hooper. “You could really see the students who had put the extra work into the brief, researching the ideas and then pushing the boundaries.”

The Awards, now in their 23rd year, recognise outstanding and innovative design of garments using fabrics containing DuPont™ LYCRA®. They provide students with a platform upon which to display their talents to New Zealand’s fashion industry early in their career. The six category winners were awarded a cash prize of $1000 each and the overall Supreme Winner will feature in a nationwide publicity program.
