Winners Announced at the 2003 b.Net New Zealand Music Awards
Winners for the 2003 b.Net New Zealand Music Awards were announced on Friday the 19th of September at the Bruce Mason Centre. The b.Net NZ Music Awards reflect the local music scene, acknowledging those artists who are not yet recognized by the mainstream.
Verse Two, who have had many live performances over the past year, were voted by the public as the Most Promising New Act. The people voted “Dub Combinations Chapter 3” as the Best Compilation and Scribe was declared the winner in the Best Vocalist/MC category.
The b.Net Awards are the only awards show in NZ to recognize talent that has not yet been signed to a record label. Artists are asked to send their demo to a b.Net station and Baitercell vs Timmy Schumacher won Best Unreleased Song for “Nasty Gymnastix”. “Morning Light” by Concord Dawn (previous winners of the Best Independent Album award) was the most played song across the b.Net air waves and was also voted Best Song by members of the public.
Of course, some bands manage to achieve broader appeal and become accepted by a larger audience. As such, The Datsuns and Rhombus took home three awards each. Both bands will not deny that the b.Net radio stations were there in the beginning, playing their demos before anyone else cared.
The Datsuns were voted by the public as the Best Live Act and Best Rock Release. They were also awarded International Achievement by the judging panel due to a successful and continuing world tour that began in early 2002.
Wellington’s Rhombus also took home three awards this year. At the 2002 b.Net New Zealand Music Awards they received the Award for Most Promising New Act and in 2003 they have gone on to collect awards for Best Music Video, Best Electronic Release and the coveted award for Best Album.
