Meatwaters3:
Meatwaters reappears this year at Happy, on the corner of Vivian and Tory, October Thursday the 2nd, Friday the 3rd, and Saturday the 4th.
It is the third year that this festival has been organised by Wellington musician Kieran Monaghan, and this year is shaping up to surpass the previous two.
The concept behind the festival was initially to pull together the musicians performing in areas of musical extremes of one form or another and makes connections between different styles.
Meatwaters1 had a possible perception of being a loud, rock show though that was not entirely the case. The scope of the show was from punk band Loosehead, lofi rock and roll of Thee Strapons to the bass and drone of 1/3 Octave Band and Birchville Cat Motel.
Meatwaters2 expanded into three nights and extended the concept of extremities with the inclusion of jazz duos, acoustic sets and painter James Robinson from Dunedin executing a 6 metre by 3-metre canvas during the event.
Meatwaters3 again bring some of the most interesting musicians within Aotearoa together again to peddle their fine talent. The concept this year is highlighting the theatrical component contained within these performances. Not quite sure what will happen really, it is the element of the unexpected which is the most exciting.
This year we have performers coming from Auckland, Palmerston Nth, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin. We have Jeff Henderson batting for the jazz crew, Te Kupu bringing his hip hop style, we are fortunate again to have the 1/3 Octave Band and Birchville Cat motel again filling in the corners, School of Meat bring their brand of intense punk, Swagger Jack's Sid Vicious meets Hank Williams, The mr sterile Assembly's anarchic cabaret, the ever brilliant Pumice one-man band, The Futurians from Dunedin bring their science fiction, and much more. Covering the visuals this year is two video artists, from Wellington Mike Heynes, and from Christchurch 'nurse surreal'
This festival recognises and acknowledges all the exemplary work these people do with little recognition within this country. Many of the performers at this festival have music releases abroad on vinyl and CD formats, cumulatively the number of releases would by in the ten's of dozens. This is a truly creative community and Meatwaters is a celebration of that spirit.
It will be three nights of excitement and challenge if nothing else.
The line up is as follows: Thursday 2nd October: Jeff Henderson and Other Swagger Jack Ditzy Squall Dick the Phone Ascension Band Friday 3rd October: The Stumps Birchville Cat Motel Te Kupu gFrenzy The Futurians The mr sterile Assembly
Saturday 4th October: Cancer Boy & the Hospital Horns 1/3 Octave Band Pumice The Bing Turkby Ensemble School of Meat Deconstruction Unit
