Friday Arvo Surf Update

Friday Arvo Surf Update

Raglan and New Plymouth regions were a good place to be this week with the off-shores hanging in all week and a southwest swell that just wouldn't go away. We are in for a few waves this weekend as well.

The O'Neil Pro is going on in a French seaside town called Anglet at the moment. Perusing the Heat Sheets I noticed four, yes four, New Zealand surfers lurking in amongst the draw. So we send out a big cheer to the Quinn boys, Maz and Jay, plus Mark Dovey and Blair Stewart. Give em heaps lads, those French beachies are just like Wainui at home, so we are sure you'll do well!

- WEATHER SITUATION - REGIONAL REPORT - WHAT'S HOT

------------------ WEATHER SITUATION:

The weather map looks real similar to last Fridays, in fact damn near the same. We have a low forming off to the northeast of the North Island. There is a high sitting underneath this low. We have a high leaving Australia and heading this way. There is a small low sitting just off the West Coast. There is also a low way down south with a strong west to southwest airflow associated with it.

---------------- REGIONAL REPORT:

NORTH ISALND:

Northland; Auckland; Coromandel; Waikato; B.O.P:

West Coast: Northeast to easterly winds today and this weekend. We have a southwest swell of 2-4 feet and a west swell developing. We are also expecting a lift in swell tomorrow or Sunday from the southwest. LT 1210.

East Coast: Onshore east to northeast winds this afternoon and tomorrow and then a change to southeast. Southeasterlies on Sunday. We should start to see more swell tomorrow. A messy lumpy 1-2 feet this afternoon. HT 1550.

Gisborne; Wairarapa:

All the way from East Cape to Cape Palliser we are looking at east to northeast for the weekend. A northeast swell should develop from the low to the north. This afternoon we have 1-3 feet of left over swell. The winds are light north to northwest. HT 1430.

Taranaki:

Northerly this afternoon in town with the wind trying to be northwest down the coast. Small lumpy 1-1.5 feet in town and 2 foot with odd bigger ones down the coast. We are expecting the swell to pick up from the west and the southwest over the weekend. It is looking like northeast winds for the weekend. LT 1155.

Wellington:

West Coast; North to northwest winds this weekend and the possibility of a small wind swell developing with a little help from the low in the Tasman Sea. So keep your fingers crossed. LT 1155.

South Coast; We should see a little more swell tomorrow with an increase from the southwest expected. Don't expect too much though. The winds will swing to the south briefly and then back to the north. Fresher northwest is even possible. You haven't seen one of them for a while. HT 1335.

SOUTH ISLAND:

West Coast:

Northeast to easterly offshores finally swinging southwest by late Sunday. We have had an increase in swell today with 3-4 feet on the rise from the west. The swell is looking like building from the north as well over the weekend. LT 1255.

Kaikoura; Canterbury:

Kaikoura: Northerlies this afternoon and a couple of feet of east swell just. The wind is forecast to be southwest tonight and back to the northwest tomorrow tending northeast. We can expect a little more swell from the south tomorrow. HT 1330.

Christchurch: We have 1-2 feet this afternoon at Taylor's with a light 3-knot northeasterly wind. Fresher northeast swing southwest and then back to the northeast is the forecast for the weekend. We are expecting a lift in swell on the other side from the south. Plus a lift in swell from the north with any luck.

Dunedin; Southland:

Small this afternoon with 1-2 feet of south swell. Rising south swell over the weekend. Plus we should see an east to northeast swell by Sunday. The wind is forecast to swing southwest this afternoon and back to northwest by Saturday and then back to northeast Sunday. LT 1730.

----------- WHAT'S HOT:

The O'Neill Pro - Cavaliers Beach - Anglet, France.

Some of Kiwi Boys have been competing in the O'Neill Pro, (WQS 5 Star event) in France. Unfortunately, Mark Dovey, Blair Stewart and Jay Quinn have all been knocked out overnight. From what we can make out, Maz (who is seeded higher than the other guys) is still to compete in his first heat in the Round of 96. Flat conditions have meant slow progress in getting thru' the heats.

------------------------- THIS MONTH'S COMPETITION:

The competition for the month of August is the Surf Vision Video competition where you can win three videos of you choice. Get in there and enter now... http://surf.gravitymail.com/cp/39589C9I524F07N44YJN4J6V/

Don't forget to "surf before you surf" Cheers,

The Surfco Team
