Friday Arvo Surf Update
Friday Arvo Surf Update
Pinch and a punch for the first of the month!
We thought we would give you a bit more info, retrospectively that is. 'The week that was' ...so to speak. Who has been slipping into a few while some of us have been missing out.
We had easterlies for most of the country last week. This brought offshores to the West Coast and onshores of course to the east. There has been swell on both coasts with a northwest swell starting the week off on the west and it slowly swung to the southwest.
Good waves were had virtually on the whole of the West Coast. The East Coast had swell but unfavorable winds. Northeasterlies predominating in the afternoons. Fog hung on to Christchurch with a vengeance this week. A few waves were had at Taylors.
- WEATHER SITUATION - REGIONAL REPORT - WHAT'S HOT
WEATHER SITUATION:
It is looking like a wet weekend with a cluster of fronts and lows surrounding and on top of us. We have a small low in the Tasman Sea with another low of similar size sitting just off the northern East Coast. The low that gave us the east swell and the easterlies has headed off into the Pacific. Down to the south there is the usual going on with a low poking its head out from under Tasmania and another one drifting further to the east in the Southern Ocean on it's way to Chile.
REGIONAL REPORT:
North Island
Northland; Auckland; Coromandel; Waikato; B.O.P:
West Coast: Another weekend of waves with the swell on the rise today from the west southwest. Expect a solid 4-6 tomorrow that will start to ease Sunday. Northeast this arvo with easterlies tomorrow and southeast on Sunday. HT 1155.
East Coast: Onshore East to northeast winds this afternoon and tomorrow, then a change to the southeast. Southeasterlies on Sunday. We should start to see more swell on Sunday. A messy, lumpy 1-2 feet this afternoon. Offshores by Monday or Tuesday at the latest. LT 1515.
Gisborne; Wairarapa:
All the way from East Cape to Cape Palliser we are looking at East to Northeast winds going southeast by Sunday morning. A southwest swell will kick in on Saturday and we are expecting 2-4 feet and this swell will swing more to the southeast. This afternoon we have about 1-2 feet from the east with a northeasterly wind. HT 1245.
Taranaki:
Northeast offshores tending easterly and then southeast this weekend, combined with new swell from the west we are in for some waves. The swell has picked up this afternoon and we have a clean 2-3 feet in town, bigger of course down the coast. We are expecting the swell to peak tomorrow. LT 1245.
Wellington:
West Coast; East to southeast winds this weekend and a small west swell when you get out of the lee of the South Island. Head north for waves on this coast for a few hours and you will score. LT 1245.
South Coast; We should see more swell tomorrow with an increase in southwest expected by the arvo. Don't think it will be too exciting as the wind is forecast to be east to southeast and quite fresh on Sunday. We have a light northeasterly this afternoon with a small as one foot of swell in front of the surf clubs. HT 1425.
South Island
West Coast:
Northeast to easterly offshores finally swinging southwest by late Sunday. We have had an increase in swell today with 3-4 feet on the rise from the west. The swell is looking like building over the weekend. This afternoon it is clean and there are waves to be had. HT 1310.
Kaikoura; Canterbury:
Southeast winds developing today and tending northeast by Sunday. We have a small east swell in Kaikoura this afternoon of a couple of feet. Rising swell from the southwest tomorrow. LT 1300.
Christchurch: Light winds again and the fog is lifting. Southwest winds tending southeast and strengthening tomorrow, back to northeast on Sunday. We have a small 1-1.5 feet of easing east swell this afternoon. You might just find the odd 2 footer. A lift in swell tomorrow from the south is on the cards.
Dunedin; Southland:
Northeast tomorrow with northwest winds on Sunday. Small this afternoon with 1-1.5 feet of east swell. Rising south swell with a good 2-3 feet maybe even 4 feet by the end of play tomorrow. HT 1220.
