New Zealanders raised more than $30,000 for Summit Day held on 29 May 2003, the 50th anniversary of Sir Edmund Hillary's ascent of Mt Everest. Sir Edmund Hillary will be accepting a cheque on behalf of the Himalayan Trust and Grant Davidson, director of the Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoor Pursuit Centre will accept the other cheque.
Dame Cath Tizard, chairperson of the Sir Edmund Hillary Trust, which co-ordinated Summit Day, said it was wonderful to know that the work and philosophies of Sir Edmund would continue through these two initiatives.
"Many thousands of New Zealanders demonstrated practically on Summit Day their appreciation and admiration for Sir Edmund's achievements by climbing their own personal 'Mt Everest' and many people and organisations, such as Westpac, contributed time and services to make the day a huge, unforgettable success," Dame Cath said.
Westpac's General Manager Marketing and Products Michelle van Gaalen said "Summit Day really captured the enthusiasm of not only our branches but schools and communities throughout New Zealand. Sir Edmund Hillary is such a respected New Zealander and it was a pleasure for Westpac to be involved"
