The 16th Wellington Fringe Film Festival begins this Sunday

The country’s finest filmmakers and emerging talent will be showcasing their music clips and short films at the Wellington Fringe Film Festival from Sunday the 13th to Thursday the 17th of July.

Kicking off the Festival on the 13th at 8pm, is the Kodak Music Clip Awards at Bar Bodega on Ghuznee Street. The event celebrates the craft of making music clips and has attracted a record number of entries this year with a total of 91 submissions.

Clips from well-known directors such as Joe Lonie, Chris Graham, Wade Stotter and Rachel Davies are among the contenders.

Each entry will be judged for all categories: Best Video, Runner Up, Best Director of Photography, Best Editor and The Knack Award — for the triumph of grand ideas over small budgets. Winners of each category will receive prizes generously donated by the New Zealand film industry.

Tickets can be purchased from Bar Bodega on the night, for what’s guaranteed to be an aural and visual feast of great New Zealand music.

Day two of the Festival sees the beginning of the Short Film Programme at The Paramount Theatre on Courtenay Place. With 120 short films to be shown over the four days, there’s something for everyone. Daily screening sessions of approximately two hours are separated into the genres of drama, experimental, animation and documentary.

Besides seeing a great collection of kiwi flicks, the audience also have the opportunity to talk to some of the filmmakers about their work…if that’s you then you never know, you could end up chatting to the next Peter Jackson…

With day five comes the grand finale to the Festival - The Special Competition. Established to promote originality and innovation within a given theme and timeframe. All of the 18 films in this competition are less than 3 minutes long (including credits) and contain a reference to "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly". Run for the last five years, this competition has helped encourage first-time filmmakers and students to give it a go, with some outstanding results.
