WEATHER SITUATION:
We are surrounded again by lows and highs. The weather map looks unreal. We have a low in the Tasman, that has been battering the Gold Coast and by Sunday we will see a heap of swell off it, on the West Coast, coming out of the west to northwest. We have a high sitting off the East Coast, which is delivering the northeast winds. On the other side of the high, we have a low that is producing southeast to east swell. As that low slowly drifts away and gets a bit more mixed up, with the airflow coming off the top of the high, the swell will swing to northeast and we are expecting it to build by Sunday. REGIONAL REPORT: North Island
Northland; Auckland; Coromandel; Waikato; B.O.P:
West Coast: The weekend is looking good for this coast with northeast offshores and hopefully an easing swell. This arvo, it is still quite big out the back and is breaking on an outside bank and the reforming inside at about 3-4 feet. Real long lulls today, so tomorrow is looking good and we have a feeling the swell will rekick from the west northwest late Sunday. LT 1410.
East Coast: No shortage of swell this weekend, in fact we expect to see more by Sunday. Strong northeast onshores all weekend unfortunately. We have 3-4 feet this afternoon from the east and the swell will swing more northeast. LT 1140.
Gisborne; Wairarapa:
Northeast onshores all weekend on this part of the coast. We will start off with southeast to east swell that will swing more to the northeast over the weekend. LT 1020.
Taranaki:
The place to be this weekend, with northeast offshores all weekend. We have a clean 2-3 feet in town and it is bigger down the coast with a solid 4-5 feet. Heaps of lines pouring in. Beware of a northwesterly late Sunday. LT 1420.
Wellington:
West Coast; Light northeast winds are forecast for the weekend, but you can bet they will swing northwest on this coast. No swell to speak of until you get a lot further north. Go hunting in the Wanganui, southern Taranaki region this weekend. HT 0800.
South Coast; Light northerly down the bay this arvo and a small 1-2 feet of easing southeast swell. It is looking good for over the coast tomorrow with northeast winds forecast and we should still have a small southeast swell of 2-3 feet. Now the swell is going to swing more to the northeast and should build on Sunday arvo. We are expecting north to northeast winds all weekend. HT 1605.
South Island
West Coast:
We have a southwesterly swell this afternoon, of 3-4 feet and light variable winds. The wind is forecast to go to the northeast and will be from this quarter for most of the weekend. We are expecting a northwest swell to develop tomorrow and really kick in by Sunday. HT 0910.
Kaikoura; Canterbury:
Northeast winds all weekend and an easing southeast swell. The good news is, a rising northeast swell, which will get into the Town beaches. We have a lightish northeast wind in town this afternoon, with a couple of feet of Northeast swell. On the other side of the Peninsular we have the remnants of the southeast swell with 2-3 feet. Kaikoura has a light northerly wind this afternoon and south swell 2-3 feet. The mornings will be the time to surf before the northeast kicks in by mid morning. HT0940.
Dunedin; Southland:
We have an easing southeast swell of 2-3 feet with a light northeasterly this arvo. The forecast is for northeast winds all weekend. As the southeast swell eases it is looking like a northeast swell will develop and should really kick in by Sunday. HT 1350.
