Another 16 Medals Overnight
New Zealand has won 16 more medals at the 2003 Special Olympics World Summer Games, including six golds, taking their total to 19 in just three days of competition.
Special Olympics Executive Director and Head of Delegation for the Games, Chris Hooper, says the achievement is incredible.
“We feel like we really have struck gold! For the first week the team was having a lot of trouble with jetlag, but nothing’s holding us back now,” he said.
Bocce players Catherine Boyle and Julie Trail (both from Wanganui) won gold in their singles bocce divisions, Lance Dempsey (Horowhenua), Maria Dixon (Nelson) and James Farrell (Hawkes Bay) won gold in their working trail equestrian events, and Katrina Hewett (Oamaru) won her gold in the 100m women’s breaststroke.
The talented team now also boasts seven silver and four bronze medals in a variety of sports including bocce, athletics, aquatics and equestrian. Adding to the two golds and one bronze awarded on Monday, the team is certainly making its mark at the Games.
“Our motto: Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt, is something Special Olympians always stand by,” said Hooper.
“Even if the team had won no medals at the Games we would still be proud of them, but our success certainly is good news!”
