Concert of grand proportions for Ode To Joy
Concert of grand proportions
A mass choir of 130 voices and some of New Zealand’s finest vocal soloists join the Auckland Philharmonia and conductor Miguel Harth-Bedoya on stage for Beethoven’s incomparable and uplifting Symphony No.9 (Choral) on Thursday 17 and Friday 18 July during the orchestra’s Royal & SunAlliance Series.
If ever there was such a thing as an all-time classical “top hit”, this honour would undoubtedly be awarded to Beethoven’s final symphony – a monumental work that has moved its global audience for nearly 200 years.
The line-up of soloists includes Jenny Wollerman (soprano), Zan McKendree-Wright (mezzo soprano), Simon O’Neill (tenor) and David Griffiths (baritone). The choir comprises the Chapman Tripp Opera Chorus, Hamilton Civic Choir and Renaissance Singers.
To complement Beethoven’s great work is Gillian Whitehead’s Alice, with mezzo soprano Helen Medlyn. This piece, written especially for Helen and the Auckland Philharmonia, is inspired by Fleur Adcock’s poem Alice, which depicts the life of courageous Englishwoman Alice Adcock who travelled to New Zealand to live in 1909.
Don’t miss this spectacular concert! Thursday 17 & Friday 18 July – 8pm, Auckland Town Hall Beethoven: Symphony No.9 (Choral) and Whitehead: Alice Adult tickets from $20.
