Coming to Bartley Nees Gallery

Works of Artists Monique Jansen, Esther Leigh and Sara Hughes are coming to the Bartley Nees Gallery, 147 Cuba Street, Wellington from May 27 June 21, 2003.

Bright, refreshing and lively, the exhibition reveals the on-going vitality of abstraction in contemporary art practice.

Above is Sara Hughes' work Millions of Colours.

All three artists share an interest in the tension and intersection between the hand-made and the mechanically made.

Their paintings, which show a delight in process, explore the effect, affect and impact of repetitive patterns.

Entering the territory of op art and even pop art they are at once ethereal and sensual, transparent and dense, serious and light-hearted.

Esther and Sara will be present at the opening.

Sara Hughes is a young artist who is currently working in Duendin as the holder of the Frances Hogkins Fellowship. Her work has just been seen in Wellington in the Dirty Pixels exhibition at the Adam Art Gallery.
