“In May 1993 I arrived in Wellington intending to continue producing and exhibiting art work as I had been doing for some years from the South Island. However, I found that there were other demands on my time and energies and life in the Capital is very different from Geraldine, South Canterbury.”

“This showing at ROAR! gallery is the public re-launch of my artistic career. The work is a selection form my Wellington period to date. I am dedicating it to the memory of my last husband Bobby Joe McGee.”

“These works that I’m showing in Melting into Spring are Landscape inspired. The work draws on the scenes I’ve seen in the country at Dad’s, flowers at the Botanical gardens, or just looking at clouds I’ve seen from my backyard in Wellington.”

“Some of these paintings have hazy, misty and atmospheric quality to them. They sort of have a quieter feel to them.”

If the sun is shining and there is no strong winds, that’s photo making time.

I work outdoors, my most usual method is under a covered frame, where I can control the light and reflections. I work with easy to find things like sand, earth, weather, paint, glass, paper, rust, slime, shadows and reflections etc

I take my subjects form all experiences like from moods of sadness to humour, from my spiritual or sexual feelings, to subjects like war, parties or cleaning my teeth.

For me picture making is more than on the surface, It’s like getting in and bringing out something tainted more the way I feel. There’s frustrations with what I do, but also there is adventure through inventing and discovering. This makes it a compulsion and an addiction.
