Triangle Television brings international perspective on war and screens highly acclaimed Gulf War series
Triangle Television's live broadcasts and regular breaking-news updates are providing New Zealand viewers with an
international perspective on the war in Iraq. As well, beginning March 25, the station will screen "The Gulf War TV
Project", a highly-acclaimed, 10-part investigative series produced in 1990 which is aimed at shifting some of the myths
surrounding the Gulf War.
The live broadcasts screen weekdays from noon to 3pm and provide up-to-the-minute coverage of the war in Iraq. From time
to time, Triangle will also break into scheduled programmes to bring viewers significant information and updates that go
to air as live broadcasts via satellite feeds.
Triangle Television chief executive Jim Blackman says viewers tuned to Triangle get a broad international perspective on
the war because the coverage is immediate and diverse.
"Our programmes come direct via satellite and are not edited or filtered locally, so the news retains its distinct
international flavour and viewpoint," Mr Blackman says.
Each weekday, coverage begins with "The Journal", the main information programme from German television channel DW-tv.
The hour-long high profile news programme features up-to-the-minute coverage of the war as it unfolds. It is followed at
1pm by "Voice of America" which includes wide-ranging live coverage with highlights from US State Department and
Department of Defence press conferences.
"PBS News Hour" commences at 2pm and features more live and up-to-date coverage of events as they unfold in Iraq and
throughout the world.
The series of 10 programmes entitled "The Gulf War TV Project" will screen on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7.30p.m. The
first in the series goes to air on Tuesday March 25.
This series takes an in depth look at the connection between the military and energy industries, the 'selling' of the
war by the media to the American people, US relations with the Middle East and foreign policy since the Cold War. As
well, viewers will gain a first hand insight into the effect of the Gulf War on the American soldiers and their
families. The series also examines the claim that racism was used to dehumanise the enemy and features interviews with
Arab Americans victimised by violence.
"The Gulf War TV Project" was produced by Paper Tiger Television which aims to challenge and expose mainstream media.
Triangle's live news programmes and its Gulf War series are must-watch television for viewers eager to obtain the most
up to date international news reports on the war in Iraq and a wide perspective on the Gulf War and its connections with
what is happening in Iraq today. Triangle Television is Auckland's only regional, non-commercial television station and
has operated as a public broadcaster to Greater Auckland since August 1 1998. The channel screens a mix of
regional-access television with international news and information programmes. It is non-profit making and operates with
no funding from NZ On Air. Triangle broadcasts 24 hours daily from UHF channel 41.
