This Weekend's Surf Report

Good afternoon, it is looking like waves for the weekend on both coasts...yeehaaa!! We might even get the Americas Cup back up and running today. Come on Team NZ.

Early next week the March issue of NZ Surfing Magazine will hit the newsstand's. There is some brilliant features in this issue with just the best photo feature of the swell we got from cyclone Dobi. Plus look and see what the guys from the Primo road trip got up to, with the gang from Channel Z. Last but not least catch up with Dan Scott and Matt Scorringe in Hawaii.

While everyone else was trying to find a wave on the East Coast, The Red Surf/Surfco crew snuck off to the West Coast with D.K. and one of the hottest underground surfers I have seen for a while - Paul Greenland. We will have a full rap on the Homepage soon.

Weather Situation

The Low that was sitting off the East Coast of the North Island has headed further to the southeast. We have a small low in the North of the Tasman Sea, plus another smaller low further to the northwest. A large High sits just off the East Coast giving us warm moist easterlies. We have a Low just departing from underneath Tasmania and there is quite a beast in the deep Southern Ocean heading southeast. There is a Front associated with the low to the south and we could see northwest winds start to develop by Sunday as the front moves over.

Regional Report

North Island

Northland; Auckland; Coromandel; Waikato; B.O.P:

West Coast: We have a southwest swell of 2-3 feet with fresh as easterly offshore. The forecast is for northeast tomorrow so the West Coast is looking like a good option for the weekend. It is hard to see the wind getting out of the easterly quarter before the end of the weekend. HT 2105. Camera link

East Coast: Well it is still onshore and we still have swell. It has eased from yesterday but it is still 2-4 feet from the southeast. Easterly onshores going northeast tomorrow and on Sunday it is looking the same. Possibly northwest if we behave ourselves. Ht 1830.

Gisborne; Wairarapa:

No shortage of swell today with a southeasterly of 3-4 feet and fresh to strong easterlies. Northeast is forecast, so few breaks will come in to shape as the wind swings. Northwest possible by Sunday. HT 1710.

Taranaki:

Waves this weekend gang nothing too big but waves still the same. We have 2-3 feet of southwest swell with southeast winds. The forecast for the weekend is northeast so down the coast is looking like the best option. It will be quite small in Town. HT 2040. Camera link

Wellington:

West Coast; Southeast this arvo and no swell guys. Northerlies tomorrow and not much hope at all. HT 2040.

South Coast; There is a southeast swell of 1-1.5 feet this morning with the lightest southeasterly wind. Over the coast is going to be the spot with more swell from the southeast expected and northeast winds. Do I need to say more? Ht 1615. Camera link

South Island

West Coast:

Waves this weekend with a southwest swell of 2-4 feet and northeast winds. The only hassle could be northwest wind by Sunday. Plenty of spots to check for waves. HT 0945. Camera link

Kaikoura; Canterbury:

A fresh northeast wind this arvo with northeast forecast for tomorrow and northwest possible by Sunday. Plenty of swell with 2-3 feet of rising east swell that will slowly go more to the southeast. Kaikoura has the swell but the wind is northeast this arvo. First thing tomorrow for 2-4 feet of east/southeast swell up this way. The other side of the peninsular will have waves as well. Ht 1540.

Dunedin; Southland:

Rising east to southeast swell of 2-3 feet and northeast winds. In fact it is looking like northeast winds for the weekend. Ht 1350. Camera link.
