5 March 30 March 2003 - Opening Tuesday 4 March 5.30pm
Trunk Rock is a multi-media installation from Wellington artist Terry Urbahn that includes sculpture, drawing, video and photography. The starting point for this exhibition, created in Urbahn¹s studio on the coast at Lyall Bay, was an investigation of the work of New Zealand Œenvironmental¹ artists from the late 1970¹s and early 1980¹s. Perhaps not surprisingly for this astute observer of contemporary urban and youth culture, other influences crept in. "While I forced myself to look at twig-art and pottery, I still couldn¹t help being swayed by B movies, my record collection and TV," he says.
Terry Urbahn has exhibited with the Bartley Nees Gallery since 1994 including memorable exhibitions such as Urban Museum Reality Service (1997), saLOON (1999) and most recently a collaborative installation with Sean Kerr SHOWDOWN in 2000. His work has continued to be shown in major group exhibitions throughout New Zealand (his video was a major talking point in the Prospect 2001 survey show at City Gallery Wellington) in and in 2001 he held his first solo exhibition in Melbourne.
