Pero Cameron Continues to Lead Off The
Court
Pero Cameron, captain of New Zealand's most successful basketball team, has won the SPARC Leadership Award at the 'Say When' sports awards held in Auckland tonight.
SPARC (Sport and Recreation New Zealand) Chief Executive, Nicolas Hill, believes "Pero Cameron displayed outstanding leadership in 2002. Pero was the rock upon which the outstanding performances of the Tall Blacks at the World Championships in Minneapolis were built."
"Cameron's leadership of the team during the World Championships was inspiring. His ability to keep the team focused on the ultimate prize through the team's amazing and unprecedented progress through the World Champs is what makes him a true leader. They concentrated on playing basketball, took on some of the world's best and gained the respect, admiration and support of the New Zealand public" said Hill.
Cameron was made joint captain of the team for the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and since then has been selected as captain in every tour he has played. He believes his main role as a captain is " ensuring we're all heading in the right direction - and that everyone knows what we are trying to do."
Leadership combines three key personal qualities - clarity of purpose - respect for all people involved in a sport, including one's own team, the opposition, officials and supporters - strength of character.
Hill believes "leadership is about taking responsibility to make something happen, having the courage to push on in the face of adversity and taking people with you. Such people inspire other leaders too. Leadership is a rare and valuable quality. It is a quality that needs to be recognised and rewarded."
Each year SPARC recognises a person whose leadership qualities have made a difference.
