Penelope Swales, Australia's firebrand of ferocious feminine folk music is once again taking it to the regions.
Once upon a time as a sixteen year old street kid Penelope sort refuge in the music, it would be her bread and butter, her road out. Singing the stories of everyday, viewed with a blend of humour emotion and honesty. Social comment, political side swipes, sensual and well meant, no topic is taboo.
The authentic edge of her first album "Between Light and Dark" laid bare a soul of beauty and a flair to describe personal experience with integrity. " Returning by Foot" followed the journey of a marriage soured and a new awareness of the wholeness of one self. "Homemade Wine", "Live at Woodford", "Justifying Your Longings to the Doctor" and "Archive" have continued to validate the talents of this born storyteller.
Passion, power and exuberance, each performances is a natural step in being the conveyer of what needs to be said. Strength and a sense of place is the foundation for presenting to her audience a reflection of life in all it's raw and wonderful glory.
2003 will see the release of "Monkey Comfort" a comment of how mankind just happens to ape the animal kingdom. Penelope lives for her music, "we all negotiate the same cycles of relationships, friends, work, loss and grief. What people respond to is when something in the song says something to them that they recognise in themselves."
When not constantly touring the globe Penelope can be found in her home workshop keeping up demand for her highly original creations of instruments made from Gourd's (pumpkins). These unique pieces have forged Totally Gourdgeous a world music band that has become an instant success on the Australian Folk Festival circuit.
Penelope in fact, is all music her performances
challenge, entertain and captivate.
