Colin McCahon: A Question of Faith is a major survey exhibition, which has seen our leading artist described as the 'Van Gogh of Australasia'. The exhibition, which is free to the public, features 77 works from throughout Colin McCahon's (1919-1987) career. Set out chronologically, it enables visitors to follow McCahon's development from the early figurative styles of the 1940s to the later abstract works. Works have been drawn from public and private collections in Europe and Australasia.
Colin McCahon: A Question of Faith is curated and organised by the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam (SMA) with the organisational support of the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki, New Zealand (AAG). The principal sponsor in New Zealand is Ernst & Young. The exhibition is generously supported by Creative New Zealand and private patrons in New Zealand and Australia. This landmark McCahon publication documents in lavish detail the exhibition - with colour plates of all paintings featured - there are a further 112 illustrations, many previously unpublished. McCahon's art is addressed in essays written by Marja Bloem, curator of the exhibition, Colin McCahon's son William McCahon, celebrated Australian writer Murray Bail and critic Francis Pound. Colin McCahon: A Question of Faith contains the most comprehensive bibliography ever compiled of the artist and a detailed chronology of his life and work.
Edited by Marja Bloem and Martin Browne, Colin McCahon: A Question of Faith was compiled by the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and published in New Zealand by Craig Potton Publishing. The publication is available at City Gallery Wellington for $59.95 paperback, and $79.95 hard cover.
