New Museums Guide To Benefit Growing Number Of Visitors

For the first time, the growing number of visitors to the country’s museums will benefit from a new free, colour guide, to be given out at all museums nationally.

Available from today ( 08 December), the guide, entitled New Zealand Museums, aims to be a valuable aid to both international and national visitors to New Zealand’s 150 museums.

Produced by Museums Aotearoa, the professional organisation for museums, art galleries and museum workers in New Zealand, the easy-to-fold brochure is organised according to island, region (north to south) and by corresponding map colour.

Telephone numbers for museums and public art galleries are listed, as well as ‘opening’ days to enable the public to plan their visit to a particular property.

The guide features colour illustrations of some of the country’s most spectacular regions including Otago, Marlborough, Christchurch, Wellington and Rotorua.

The guide is the result of feedback from face-to-face interviews with museum visitors conducted by Museums Aotearoa at the beginning of this year. Generating in excess of 1000 public exhibitions and publications, and attracting over five million visits annually, museums/galleries are ranked as one of the top attractions for New Zealand’s overseas visitors.

Joseph Lane, Chief Executive of Museums Aotearoa, said: “The guide is a tool for visitors to help them on their travels through the country. It is envisaged it will increase visitor numbers by aiding the public in planning their museum tour from Kerikeri to Stewart Island.

“I believe this guide will prove to be an asset because it will assist influential visitors both from New Zealand and overseas to explore and enjoy the richness of our culture which in turn helps to convey the rich story that affirms the values and heritage of living in Aotearoa.”
