Celebrity Sulky Race and Festival Launch
The official Showtime Canterbury launch will provide a taste of what’s on offer over the following two weeks. As a part
of the launch, some of Canterbury’s finest (but maybe not fittest!) local celebrities will battle it out in the very
popular Celebrity Sulky Race.
A special course in The Square will see the participants push one another to the limit of silliness, guaranteeing heaps
of fun and laughter.
Returning in 2002, by popular demand, (their mothers wrote to us), the Vague As Brothers will perform their own style of
polyester pop, running the risk yet again of being arrested for wearing loud clothing in a built up area.
Let’s hope the noise from the screaming lime and orange lounge suits doesn’t frighten the cute and cuddly animals which
will be on display courtesy of the A & P Show.
A selection of farm animals – courtesy of the A & P Show – will truly bring the country to town today. Llamas, sheep, and Delia The Cow (star of the Showtime Canterbury
brochure cover) will be on hand for a cuddle.
True Canterbury entertainment will be complemented by the magnificent Showtime Canterbury Painted Horses, who begin
their transformation into stunning works of art today.

The Showtime Canterbury Painted Horses Witness the creation of public art works that depict something special about our region.
Four life size model thoroughbreds, created by Crescendo Solutions, standing 17 hands tall, will be transformed into the
Showtime Canterbury Painted Horses between November 1 and 10.
Talented local artists, using the horse models as a canvas and Canterbury as their theme, will create these incredible
works of art right before your very eyes from 1st November to the 10th. The public may view the creation process and
talk to the artist about their inspiration, materials and techniques. In the week that follows they will be on display.
Inspired by similar public art installations seen all over the world, such as Cow Parade in New York City and Horse
Fever in Ocala Florida, these horses are unique in New Zealand and will capture something very special about the
Canterbury region.
These “ongoing” works of art will be in Cathedral Square on November 1, where their transformation will begin.
Held: Throughout the festival, beginning Friday 1 November in Cathedral Square and then at locations throughout the

New Brighton Carnival
Christchurch’s only seaside carnival takes place over five days on the New Brighton foreshore.
There’ll be carnival rides, food and refreshments, and on the final day of the carnival on Tuesday 5 November, the
amazing Meridian Energy Fireworks Extravaganza at the New Brighton Pier will complete a superb five day celebration.
