First Race Of LVC: Mascalzone Latino/One World 0-1
Auckland, October 1st, 2002 Clouded sky and a fresh Southwesterly wind for the first day of LVC: “TIM Mascalzone
Latino-ITA 72” left this morning the base in the Viaduct Basin to take part in the match with American “One World
Challenge: Aboard the skipper Vincenzo Onorato , the helmsman Paoloa Cian, the tactician Flavio Favini and the navigator
Silvio Arrivabene. Mrs. Lara Ciricbì, Director of Communication of the team was today on boars as the 17th person.
A gusting and shifting wind about 10/15 knots blew over the race area, made the race very demanding especially regarding
the task of sailors calling tactics. Across the finishing line the American team (James Spihill at the helm) could
finish the race in front of Mascalzone Latino by some 5’43”.
“It has been a very demanding day the tactician Flavio Favini said we exactly knew that the America team was very
good even if we were confidente we could get a better result. Unfortunately they kept the lead all the race long, but as
matter of fact we are here to build up our esperience while they are here to try to win the America’s Cup”.
Tomorrow the weather seems to be exactly the same as today and “Mascalzone Latino” will be on the race course with the
American “Oracle BMW Challenge” (helmsman Peter Holmberg). The 17th person on borad will be engineer from Milan Luigi
Carpaneda, president of the honorary committee of Mascalzone Latino America’s Cup challenger 2003.
