Auckland Grammar Contest Interdominon Title
Following on from their success at the 2002 Maersk Sealand Schools Teams Racing National Championships, Auckland Grammar School head to Tasmania, Australia on Friday to compete in the Interdominion Schools Teams Racing Contest, held from 30 September - 2 October, 2002.
Auckland Grammar won the right to represent their region and went on to beat 11 other teams at the nationals held in Whangarei in April.
Since this time the team have been training on a regular basis on Auckland Harbour for this competition. Team captain Geoff Woolley (Remuera) is no stranger to international competition, having recently returned from the ISAF World Youth Sailing Championships, bringing home a silver medal.
The team will represent New Zealand at this contest, competing against The Hutchins School of Tasmania, who won their national contest held in July this year. The regatta will be sailed out of Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania in the Pacer Class and teams will compete in the best of 21 races
The Auckland Grammar School Sailing team to represent New Zealand is:
* Geoff Woolley (Remuera) * Jonathon Rankine (St Heliers) * Scott Illingworth (Westmere) * Phillip Roberston (Glendowie) * David Robertson (Glendowie) * Michael Thorpe (Remuera)
The team have all represented New Zealand internationally in a variety of classes so this experience will be a real asset to them while they are away.
Team Manager Mike Burgess said "the team is very experienced, however sailing in unfamiliar boats will be tough, so its really good that we have 2 days of training in Hobart before the regatta begins to get used to the boats. With 21 races, anything can happen"
