Mai Publishing Secures International Exposure For Songwriters
MAI PUBLISHING has secured worldwide representation for its music catalogue with the signing of a unique deal with an international publisher.
MAI PUBLISHING is a new division of Ngati Whatua-owned MAI MEDIA which also operates Auckland's number one radio station, MAI FM 88.6; in-house record label MAI MUSIC; and the national Maori language radio service, RUIA MAI.
New Zealand's only 'active' music publisher, MAI PUBLISHING specialises in urban, hip hop and R'n'B music as well as traditional and contemporary Maori and Pacific Island sounds.
MAI PUBLISHING business affairs manager Jairsino (Jay) Wahid says the union with Mushroom Music Publishing is already paying off.
"Mushroom has immediately hit the ground running, securing three MAI tracks for use in the movie soundtrack 'Blurred' to be released later this year through Universal," Jay says.
"Mushroom has a history of administering the repertoire of indigenous peoples and this deal gives the MAI MUSIC writers and catalogue access to the international marketplace."
Mushroom Music Publishing managing director Ian James says his company has had a long association with New Zealand songwriters and the local music scene is particularly vibrant at present with a diversity of musical styles.
"The outstanding success of MAI FM 88.6 has highlighted that diversity.
"It's timely that MAI is now moving into records and publishing, and I feel that the combination of the MAI team in Auckland and the Mushroom Music expertise will create many opportunities for their writers."
