Paint the Town Red ­ celebrating radical Wellington

A Kiwi Karl Marx in his singlet and gumboots is one of the images in Idiom¹s new group exhibition ŒPaint the Town Red ­ celebrating radical Wellington¹.

The exhibition, Idiom¹s contribution to the city-wide ŒWellington on Show¹ festival, is sponsored by the NZ Seafarers Union. It will be officially opened next week by Wellington City councillor Stephanie Cook, the country¹s last publicly elected representative of the Alliance.

The Karl Marx print was originally produced as a poster by Dave Kent, a founder of the Wellington Media Collective and now a co-director of Idiom. It will soon appear on the cover of a history of socialism in New Zealand.

Along with original works by contributing artists such as Bob Kerr, Barbara Strathdee and Alan Knowles, the exhibition includes images, loaned by the NZ Film Archive, of a turning point in Wellington¹s radical history, the 1951 waterfront lookout.

The exhibition opening on Tuesday 13 August will be immediately followed by a concert at the nearby Congregational Hall in Cambridge Terrace, where Jonathon Crayford, Nick Bollinger and other local musicians will play until midnight.
