Fresh prints in Wellington

More than 20 New Zealand printmakers, including several of the country¹s biggest names, are taking part in the first-ever exhibition of the recently formed Central Print Council of Aotearoa.

The exhibition, at Wellington¹s Idiom Studio from March 21 to April 6, covers a wide range of printmaking techniques, says Central Print Council president Marty Vreede.

Marty, who teaches printmaking at Whanganui Polytechnic¹s school of art and design, has some of his own work in the exhibition, which was open to Central Print Council members from throughout New Zealand.

³There are three main functions of the newly formed printmaking trust,² says Marty. ³Firstly, communication between artists, secondly, lobbying for prints and printmakers within the arts arena, and thirdly, educating the public about printmaking through workshops and exhibitions such as this one.²

He says the Central Print Council has been running successfully for the past 16 months. ³We have run two exciting series of workshops and just finished a very well received summer school. A winter school is planned for June, which will bring master printmaker Stuart Duffin out from the Glasgow Print workshop in Scotland. Jo Ogier, a Dunedin printmaker recently back from working in Australia, will be tutoring as well.²
