You want "on the edge"?

As part of the 2002 Fringe Festival the Improv Bandits are performing an hour long improvised musical.

It is the first full length improvised musical to be performed in this country. Each night a brand new musical show is created by seven performers, two musicians and one lighting improviser, forged from a few simple audience ideas.

The Improv Bandits have established themselves as world class improvisers, and undertaking this challenge is the logical next step. The Fringe Festival - a celebration of cutting edge performances, is also the ideal time to perform it.

"Ever since our 21 show 2001 season, we've wanted to try something bigger and bolder. We've been working for six months on this, looking at what makes up a musical and building our skills. We're trying to stay true to the themes of musicals so we'll slip in dancing nuns where-ever we can" says producer Geoff Simmons. "If Andrew Lloyd Webber can make millions from musicals that constantly repeat one catchy tune, we figure improvising one can't be too hard. We should be able to come up with ONE good song in an hour..."

Joining the Bandits are some of Wellington's most talented musicians and singers to bolster the already strong musical talent of the cast.

"A lot of people ask us 'How are you going to improvise a whole musical?' says senior troupe member Jesse Mulligan. "To which I reply, 'I think I hear the phone ringing.'"
