The Evening Post Wellington Brass Band and a talented cast perform New Zealand’s first 21st Century opera, by Wellington composer Aaron Lloydd.
The Black Mill is an exciting tale of magic, drama, love, and tragedy. Inspired by Otfried Preussler’s classic novel, the opera tells the story of an apprentice’s first year in a mill that grinds bones for the devil.
Behind the story is an examination of the nature of obligations, and the relationship between master and servant. Staged in full operatic tradition, the magical setting of the production makes a statement about the relevance of opera in our modern world.
The music is modern, yet accessible, featuring memorable tunes, dance rhythms and the energy of punk rock. Former guitarist for Wellington punk band Loosehead, Aaron’s music has been performed by The Auckland Philharmonia, The Wellington Youth Orchestra, and The New Zealand String Quartet. “The brass band is my favourite though,” says Aaron. “Brass and percussion is so powerful! This is the first opera to use brass band rather than the traditional orchestra, and it gives us a real opportunity to bring opera back within the reach of the average listener.”
