Bartley Nees Gallery returns to the real world - opening Tuesday 26 Feb 5.30pm
At last after four months in virtual reality, we are moving back into an actual gallery. The process of inserting steel into the framework of 147 Cuba Street has finally been completed and hopefully now the building will withstand any tremors or jolts of the earth. It will be great to again be surrounded by the beautiful, interesting, thought-provoking and stimulatimg produced by the artists we represent. We are also looking forward to all the conversations that take place around the art in real time email isn¹t quite the same.
The Way Ahead
Our first show for the year features work from some of the sculptors and multi-media artists that we represent. Three of the artists Leon van den Eijkel, Chiara Corbelletto and Chris Braddock are featured in the Sculpture Walk on Wellington waterfront which is part of the Arts Festival. Take a walk on the waterfront and come and see some more of their work in the gallery. We have also been lucky enough to acquire from Mary-Louise Browne, the only remaining work from her highly acclaimed stone pathway series which feature in Civic Square and the Botanical Gardens. The work in this show is a small seven step pathway with the words moving from love to lust to hate.
Brett Graham is back
We are delighted to be able to include, in this first show for the year, a new work from Brett Graham who has just returned to New Zealand after a year in Europe and six months on a scholarship in Switzerland. He produced an exciting new body of work while on his Œsabbatical¹ and this will be shown in Zurich in November along with work from another Bartley Nees Gallery artist Peter Panyoczki. We will have some of this body of work available for viewing on our website in the next week or so. Brett has returned to a busy year at the same time as preparing for the start of the academic year at Elam, he has been working on a major public commission for a sculpture outside the new North Shore court house.
Anne Noble
The Dunedin Public Art Gallery/VUP book on Anne¹s photography produced to accompany the retrospective on her work has been receiving very positive reviews with an Evening Post reviewer describing it as "one of the most beautiful books published in New Zealand". He went onto say: "As someone who collects photography books, this will be a book I return to again and again." The States of Grace exhibition comes to City Gallery Wellington in May. In January, Anne spent two weeks in Antarctica on an artist-in-residence programme. We will be showing the first of this new work in June.
Other news
The multi-talented John Pule is spending six months in the sun as writer-in-residence at the University of Hawaii. He has a new exhibition opening at Gow Langsford in Auckland next week and another show in Sydney later in the year. He will be doing his next solo show with us at the beginning of next year. In the meantime, he will be continuing to send us new work throughout the year.
London based Moana is back in New Zealand for five months and based in Auckland working to produce new work for a solo show with us in May.
That¹s our news do come to the opening next Tuesday and celebrate our return to the real world. If you can¹t come then, come in and see the show and say hello anytime.
