New guide to Arrowtown launched

New guide to Arrowtown launched

A town born of gold, nestled at the foot of the mountains of western Otago, Arrowtown has retained much of its goldfields character, with historic buildings and goldmining sites. It is also a picturesque place and a popular holiday destination.

The essence of the town has been captured in a book, titled Arrowtown: History and Walks, by Julia Bradshaw. The third in a bestselling series of guidebooks published by University of Otago Press, it was launched on 24 November at the Lakes District Museum by former Arrowtown mayor Jack Reid.

The book serves as a guide to the area and as an attractive souvenir. It describes local natural history, the geology that gave rise to the gold and scheelite mining industries, and outlines the town's history. Two chapters are devoted to detailed descriptions of walks around Arrowtown's historic buildings and in the tussock-covered hills and gullies north of the town. The book is illustrated with numerous historical and contemporary photographs. Maps are included.

Author Julia Bradshaw was formerly based in Arrowtown, where she worked as a researcher and exhibitions person at the Lakes District Museum. She has written an accessible, easy-to-read book that will appeal to locals and visitors alike.
