BATS is proud / thrilled / excited to present the 4th part of STAB 2001......
Expand your brain - Experience STAB 2001!!!
The ABC Experiment
This experiment explores the encounter between the performer and the virtual body in cyberspace: stage merges with screen, cyberformance happens and our concepts of theatre are turned inside out. We will journey through chatrooms and email lists to discover a theatrical (r)evolution of language, meaning, performance and technology.
The ABC Experiment (Avatar Body Collision) is an exploration of how technology is changing our definitions of theatre, and what place cyberformance has within theatre.
Cyberformance is live performance in graphical chatrooms. The chatroom environment is one where everyone is a performer, behind the mask of their avatar or online representation. Take this idea a step further, and you have cyberformance. Scripted and rehearsed plays, virtual street theatre, politicial protest, avrobatics - the technology opens up whole worlds of dramatic possiblity, limited only by our imaginations.
What's happening?
… An email discussion group is underway between 16 people around the globe - theatre practitioners, artists and academics.
… Images and ideas being drawn from this discussion to devise a performance presentation (16-17 February 2001 3-5pm at BATS).
… Members of the group are meeting regularly online to practice cyberformance.
… A summary of the discussion and information about the project is available at http://www.abcexperiment.org.
There will also be hands-on sessions where theatre practitioners will have an opportunity to experiment with cyberformance and contribute to the discussion. The first of these will be on Thursday 29 November, 7pm, at (e)vision. Places are limited so please email helen@creative-catalyst.com if you are interested in attending.
At this session, there will be a demonstration of cyberformance using The Palace software, then you will be able to use the software to experiment with the functionality and creative possiblities of the software.
