Ethereal fav to put Laxon in history books

Cambridge trainer Sheila Laxon is vying to become the first woman to train a Melbourne Cup winner – and her horse Ethereal may just do it for her.

Ethereal is second favourite behind Australia’s Universal Prince to win Australasia’s biggest race, paying $7.00 on the TAB’s fixed odds book.

TAB head bookie Pete Young said Ethereal had run a fantastic race to win the Caulfield Cup two weeks ago.

“She’s been thrown into the Cup at a good weight and is a class mare – she has to be rated a big chance,” he said.

Speaking from Melbourne, Sheila Laxon said the chance to be the first woman to train a Melbourne Cup winner was a “very big incentive” for her.
