Inaugural Wine Scholarship Awarded To Ben Glover, Winemaker, Wither Hills Vineyards, Marlborough.

The sole New Zealand position at the Yalumba Scholarship to the Inaugural Len Evans Tutorial, created to develop the skills of young wine professionals, has been awarded to Ben Glover, Winemaker, at Wither Hills Winery.

Len Evans, indisputably the statesman of the Australian Wine Industry, has instigated this programme with a view to training a new generation of wine judges.

The tutorial run over five days is staged at the luxurious Tower Lodge in the Hunter Valley Australia. Len Evans will chair it, with participating tutors including James Halliday, Ian Mackenzie, Brian Croser, Michael Hill Smith, Bruce Tyrrell and Ian Riggs.

The scholarship, commencing on 5th November, has been valued at more than $6,000 and is a once in a lifetime opportunity to receive intensive wine tutoring by these industry icons. Only 12 successful candidates have been selected, including 1 from New Zealand, Ben Glover.

The rigorous application process included an assessment of the candidate’s position in, and passion for, the wine industry, as well as a written presentation and a key tasting test.

Chief Winemaker for Wither Hills Brent Marris said “Ben has been with Wither Hills for 4 years and is an integral part of the winemaking team. As recipient of this award, it reflects well on the future of one of our brightest up and coming young winemakers.”

The New Zealand position at the tutorial is sponsored by Yalumba, Australia’s oldest family owned winery.
