BEER SHIFTS UP A DEGREE Western Australia’s first degree in Beer Brewing has been launched at Edith Cowan University (ECU). ECU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Millicent Poole said the degree would service expanding specialist markets in the brewing sector. “One of the most exciting international trends is the growth of designer breweries producing hand-crafted beers sought after by discerning connoisseurs,” said Professor Poole. “The ECU degree will give Western Australia an edge to harness its growing micro-brewery and pub brewery industries.” http://www.brewing.co.nz/20010727wa.htm
BAR PLAN FOR OLD SWAN BREWERY THE Swan Brewery wants to run a bar at its old Mounts Bay Road brewery site which could stay open until 1am most nights and 3am on weekends. The proponent, a joint venture between Swan Brewery owner Lion Nathan and hospitality businessman Maurice Brockwell, says the plan would make maximum use of the site's historical and tourism value. http://c.moreover.com/click/here.pl?e22825966=6327
MUNICH BEER FESTIVAL HIT BY HEALTHY LIVING One million fewer people are expected to visit the Munich beer festival as Germans become more health conscious.Beer sales have dropped by nearly 5% in the first half of this year, continuing a long-term decline in consumption. But Oktoberfest organisers are confident the decline is not serious. They say beer will always be part of the German identity. http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_365033.html
NO LONGER HIP “A lot of young people told us they didn’t like the sharp taste of beer,” said Karlsberg spokeswoman Ute Leitner. “They want something better. Beer just isn’t cool enough anymore. It’s not hip. It’s what their parents drink.” http://c.moreover.com/click/here.pl?e22866928=6327
BREWERS SEE ALE SALES DROOP THE future of the British pint is under threat from a legion of foreign imports and fashionably fruity fizz, according to new figures which show the brewing industry could go the same way as manufacturing. According to the Brewers and Licensed Retailers Association (BLRA), British beer consumption between 1990 and 2000 dropped by 13 per cent as younger drinkers shun the pint for trendy alternatives. http://www.thescotsman.co.uk/business.cfm?id=94449
IT'S STILL GUINNESS, BUT IS IT REALLY IRISH? The uncertain future of St. James's Gate has raised an intriguing question among its most loyal sippers: If Guinness isn't brewed in Ireland, is it really Guinness anymore? Not surprisingly, most Irish people say they find it inconceivable that Diageo would close down St. James's Gate. They compare it to Heineken closing its Amsterdam brewery, or Miller leaving Milwaukee. http://c.moreover.com/click/here.pl?e22840333=6327
BREWER FOR AUSTRALIA Newly renovated pub in Australian rural location some 2 1/2 hrs from state capital city, is looking for a suitably qualified and/or experienced brewer to assist in the set up and ongoing management of a micro brewery to be constructed within the hotel. The successful applicant will have autonomy of the brewhouse but be expected to become involved in other functions of the hotel as appropriate. The salary package is negotiable depending upon qualifications and experience, and there is an opportunity for some financial investment and/or part remuneration based on turnover.
