Death Heads To Rabbitohs With Warriors Blessing

Auckland, New Zealand, August 01, 2001 – The Vodafone Warriors announced today that hooker Jason Death will be released from the club at the conclusion of the 2001 season.

Death will remain with the Vodafone Warriors as the club attempts to chase its first ever spot in the finals series, however next season he will play his football with the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

Vodafone Warriors chief executive officer, Mick Watson said the 29-year-old hooker has been a great asset to the club over the years and applauded his tenacity and toughness as a footballer.

“Doc is a senior player within our club and his leadership has allowed us to get through the year and to a position of one point outside the top-eight. However, we do have depth and quality at hooker through the emergence of Monty Betham, the coverage provided by Kevin Campion and the development of Cheyenne Motu, the Junior Kiwi hooker who is part of our scholarship programme,” said Watson.

“We wish Jason all the best for the remainder of his playing career and he certainly goes to the South Sydney Rabbitohs with our blessing. We still have a job to do though for the remainder of this season and Jason remains part of Daniel’s plans.”

The former Australian schoolboy representative said today he will take life-long memories with him from his three-year stint in Auckland and his 1999 Player of the Year award will be remembered with pride. But it is the prospect of making the play-offs that has him most excited.

“My personal goal at the start of this year was to play finals football and I still have a chance of achieving that goal with the Vodafone Warriors. I’ll be giving it everything for our last five games and will give 100% support to Daniel and the boys,” said Death.

“I have signed a two year deal with the Rabbitohs and look forward to another exciting chapter in my life, but that can wait because I still have unfinished business here.”

Jason Death joined the Vodafone Warriors in 1999. To date he has played 53 first grade games for the club, scoring 11 tries.

He has been placed on stand-by for the Vodafone Warriors clash against Penrith this Sunday.
